Abstract

As part of the bicentenary marking the beginning of the Greek Revolution, the Youth Centre of the Holy Metropolis of Lefkada and Ithaca hosts an online series of events entitled “Around our Great ’21”. The fourth event is dedicated to an important event for the fate of Lefkada that is connected with national history in general. This is the meeting of the chiefs in Magemenos in 1807 in order to prepare the struggle. Ali Pasha wanted, with Turkish-Albanian warriors, to besiege Lefkada where various fortresses had been created such as the Castle of Tekke, Agios Georgios, Alexandros and the island of Fortino with which the Lefkadians defended. Patriarch Ignatius became the leader of the stealth armies, creating a defence system. The forces of the island rallied against the enemy under a united leadership, which was important for subsequent developments, as the speaker emphasises.
