Abstract

"The Greek Revolution of 1821 took place in a region shaken by the emergence of national movements of the 19th century. In neighbouring Italy, but also in Bulgaria, Serbia, Moldova, Wallachia, Bosnia and other parts of the Ottoman Empire at this time, there was unrest related to issues inherent in the Ottoman administration, to the skirmishes for national self-determination of the peoples of the regions but also to the enthusiasm created by the Greek Revolution. At the same time, the 1821 Revolution sparked a fierce wave of support for the struggling Greeks in Europe and America. The support was expressed in various ways: through visiting Greece, participating in the struggle, financial support, the formation of philhellenic committees, articles in the press, the publication of political and literary works, the production of works of art inspired by 1821 (visual arts, music, opera). These issues are the stimuli for a wide-ranging, interdisciplinary discussion on national movements and philhellenism, which emerged within the framework of an open international digital conference organised by the Institute of Historical Research of the National Hellenic Research Foundation in the context of the events commemorating and honouring the 1821 Revolution."
