Abstract
This book reconstructs the portrait of Bouboulina, one of the most recognisable and familiar figures of the Revolution, utilising the existing Greek and foreign historiography, as well as texts and sources known and unknown to the general public. Laskarina Bouboulina (whose maiden name was Pinotsi), known to all as “Bouboulina”, associated her name and life with the 1821 Revolution. In a purely male-dominated world, the “Great Lady of Spetses” was a source of inspiration for the revolted Greeks, with her determination and economic and personal sacrifices. Her personality encompasses multiple roles: philanthropic, cruel, loyal, generous, both selfish and selfless, militant, negotiator, wife, widow, sister, mother of many children, mother of heroes, but above all a woman and a heroine herself. The “Female Captain of the Greek Revolution” will always be a highly symbolic figure for the nation, women, the struggle and liberty.
