Abstract

This volume in the series “200 years since the Revolution” deals with the story of Petrobey Mavromichalis. It provides a portrait of the notable from Mani, without embellishments and omissions, whose contribution was a catalyst for the Greek Revolution. Without a doubt, Mavromichalis is among the most emblematic figures of the Greek Revolution. Holding high positions, such as the bey of Mani in the pre-revolutionary years, the president of the executive and the commander-in-chief of the Peloponnesian troops during the struggle, Mavromichalis played an important role in the national and political emancipation of the Greeks from Ottoman rule. He did not hesitate to criticise the Greek revolutionaries for their stance during the civil wars, stressing the need for them to unite in order to achieve independence. Despite being one of the first supporters of Ioannis Kapodistrias, he opposed the governor’s measures, which aimed to limit the power of the country’s traditional elites, coming into conflict with him. The assassination of the governor by Petrobey’s relatives tarnished the image of his family among the Greeks, a fact that continues to this day to hinder the universal recognition of his contribution to the struggle for Independence.
