Abstract

Which military battles during the Revolution had an unfavourable outcome for the Greeks and what developments triggered them? What were their consequences in the course of the joint effort and in what way did they endanger the struggle for Independence? How are the specific defeats interpreted based on the political and military data of the time? Who were the protagonists of these battles and to what extent did their sacrifices take on symbolic proportions? In answering these questions, the present study intends to present and interpret the military defeats during the national uprising, from 1822 to 1826. The Chios Massacre, the Destruction of Naoussa, the Battle of Peta, the death of Markos Botsaris in Kefalovryso as well as the Kasos Massacre and the destruction of Psara have an emblematic place in the national collective memory. Similarly, during the invasion of Ibrahim, the memory of the defeat at Kremmidi, the occupation of Sfaktiria, the surrender of Niokastro, the death of Papaflessas in Maniaki, the invasion of Ibrahim in Tripoli and Argos, the Battle of Tripoli and finally the Exodus of Messolongi remain alive.
