Abstract
The Association of Philologists of Kozani, honouring the bicentenary of the declaration of the 1821 Revolution, hosts a series of online discussions entitled “1821: Local and international aspects of the Revolution”, under the auspices of the Region of Western Macedonia. This talk presents a leading heroic personality of the prerevolutionary period, the chieftain and Philiki Etairea member Ioannis Farmakis. The speaker first analyses the historical context from the 12th century to the years of the revolution, attempting an exploratory approach to the historical sources that refer to the province of Eordea under Ottoman rule, with emphasis on the role of the village of Vlasti. Then questions are examined such as the way we read and interpret history as well as whether today, 200 years later, the real subjects who have contributed to the transformation of Greek society have emerged.
