Abstract
On the bicentenary of the 1821 Revolution, the official narrative seeks to resurrect stereotypes that historical research has disproved. The 21 stories in the book seek to contribute to this effort, guided by the words of Dionysios Solomos, that “the nation must learn to consider national what is true” and not what is convenient for the ruling class at the moment. These small narratives feature fighters of the revolution who are despised by official history, such as Tudor Vladimirescu, Meletis Vasileiou, Panagiotis Karatzas, Antonis Oikonomou, Lykourgos Logothetis. Great but also unflinching personalities of the struggle, such as, among others, Alexandros Mavrokordatos and Georgios Karaiskakis, are presented through the real events and their contradictions without hagiographies or deification. Hidden truths of the revolution that have been silenced or falsified are retrieved from oblivion and distortion. The disappearance of the Philiki Etaireia, the famous loans and in general the policy of the Great Powers towards the struggle. The attitude of notables towards the refugees, after the massacre in Psara, but also in the besieged Messolongi, the “historical problem” associated with Kapodistrias’ name. Stories like those of Don Pacifico and Papoulakos that date back to the revolution, but are associated with a thousand stories with it. Two centuries years later, a fantasy continues to roam.
