Abstract
This book utilises Ottoman documentary material (documents from religious courts) from Thessaloniki, asks new research questions and is situated in a new historiographical context. The originality of the project lies in the effort of scholars to utilise documents that were not considered important by historical scholars. The research questions of the project were formed on this basis. The first part of the book examines the historical context, which is articulated around two themes: the city and the court. The second part includes the revolutionary conjuncture, which is approached both through the events themselves and from the consequences of the revolution with their various parameters (criminal measures, policies to restore order and confiscation of property and weapons). Finally, the third part focuses on the Ottoman military, both on land and at sea, and its supply to the north and south, as well as the issue of taxation. The two authors attempt to illuminate, with a fresh historiographical look, partially known material. Utilising it to the fullest and placing it in the wider Ottoman context, they ask new research questions.
