Abstract
Dimitrios Vikelas’ “Loukis Laras” with Manolis Mavromatakis on stage for the first time. An alternative proposal for the bicentenary of the 1821 Revolution by Piraeus Municipal Theater, directed by its artistic director, Lefteris Giovanidis. A personal confession, which reveals the less glorious and brilliant aspects of the period of 1821, introducing us to the persons whom history has set aside: the anti-heroes. Those who, after the struggle, heroically undertake to continue “life”. The anti-heroism of time is what makes the work more relevant than ever. What does the average man of the revolution have to share with us? He is an everyday man, simple, like most of us: cowardly and courageous at the same time, strong and weak, generous and selfish, fearful and dynamic – an alloy of fruitful contrasts that ensures not only survival but also evolution. Turning into a protagonist a former “accomplice of life”, the show attempts to highlight the historicity and emotion of everyday life. The priceless value of the personal diary next to the history book: this is Loukis Laras.
