Abstract

As part of the bicentenary marking the beginning of the Greek Revolution, the Youth Centre of the Holy Metropolis of Lefkada and Ithaca hosts an online event entitled “Around our Great ‘21”. The 14th talk concerns the costume of the Greek lords of Wallachia on the eve of the Greek Revolution. The speaker refers to the Siatista doctor Konstantinos Karakasis, who tried to provide an overview of the Vlach costume at the end of the Phanariot era. He claimed that there were two types of clothing: the clothes of the villagers and the clothes of the lords, which had an oriental influence. Then it presents a range of representative clothes of the time giving details about the quality, decoration, colours, fabrics. It presents indicative men’s and women’s coats, vests, hats, shoes, jewellery through rich photographic material from museums, private collections and portraits, which show the evolution and transition from the traditional society of the Danubian Principalities to the Western world.
