Abstract
Cosmote TV presents director Yorgos Gkikapeppas’ 14-episode historical documentary on the rebirth of the Greek nation. The episodes were shown from 24 December 2020 to 25 March 2021. In the new production of Cosmote TV, two postgraduate students, under the supervision of the Athens University emeritus professor Thanos Veremis and history professor Andeas Koukos, undertake to investigate the rebirth of the Greek nation during the 400 years of Turkish rule. Through dramatised scenes, narratives and interviews of historians and professors, the series "The Birth of a Nation-State" revives post-Byzantine Greece, from the fall of the Byzantine Empire in 1453 and the long period of Ottoman rule, to the preparation for the independence in 1821, but also the first turbulent years of free Greece until the middle of the 19th century. At the same time, the series sheds light on the social, linguistic, cultural and educational implications of the long period of the Turkish yoke in the evolution of Hellenism. Playing the roles of the two students are the actors Dimitra Matsantonis and Alexandros Chrysanthopoulos.
