Abstract

The Athens City Museum–Vouros-Eutaxias Foundation presents the new solo exhibition of Konstantinos Papamichalopoulos titled “Palingenesia” (Rebirth), which takes its name from the resurrection or resurgence of the Greek people, reborn as a nation-state. The Greek nation resurrected, reborn, because it acquired an independent existence and a new era began after the liberation of the Greeks from the Turks. In the spirit of bicentenary of the national uprising, the painter honours the founding significance of this occasion in the face of those who stood up, both on the battlefield as well as in politics. The martyr Athanasios Diakos, Kolokotronis and Karaiskakis, all the heroes who have been deeply ingrained in the collective memory from the school halls and the annual commemorative events, all of them return with the painter's brush, not as mere historical portraits, but as images that regain meaning and a new lease on life in the present.
