Abstract

As part of its series of talks on 1821, the Iakovatios Library held its second online discussion on the topic "The naval struggle of 1821". The speaker covered three main areas: The types of ships used in the revolution, the Greek artillery and the most important naval battles. The speaker points out that the accumulation of wealth and the spread of ideas kickstarted the struggle, thanks to the Greek merchant shipping. The treaty of Küçük Kaynarca also played an important role, as well as the experience and perception of the sailors who terrorised the enemy. Finally, he mentions that sources of information about the history of the naval struggle of the Greek revolution are the ship diaries and the memoirs of the captains.
