Abstract

As part of its series of talks on 1821, the Iakovatios Library held its sixth online discussion on the topic “The beginning of the revolution in the Danubian Principalities”. The speaker initially defines the Danubian Principalities as the region of Moldavia and Wallachia that were the refuge of persecuted Greeks and emphasises that this historic event as well as its fighters are generally unknown. He mentions the participation of Ionians and Kefalonians in this part of the revolution and the role of Russia, which was opposed to any revolutionary action. In the end he refers to the excommunication of Patriarch Grigorios V and to all the background that led to it.
