Abstract

The bicentenary of the 1821 Revolution gave the ticket for 12 works by Theophilos, from the collection of the Theophilos Museum in Varia, Mytilini, to travel to Hydra, to be exhibited in the Historical Archive–Museum of Hydra. Among the exhibits are works by the popular painter inspired by the Greek revolutionary struggle, such as “Athanassios Diakos” and “Death of Markos Botsaris”, but also the emblematic and much-loved “Erotokritos and Aretousa”. Of particular interest are two works whose subject is rather surprising: “Etna” and “Farewell of the French Vice-Admiral”.
