Abstract

The “1821 Before and After” exhibition at the Benaki Museum–Pireos 138 offers a fascinating one-hundred-year historical narrative, from 1770 to 1870, through 1,200 works of art and documents across 2,500 sq.m and over eight months (March–November 2021). It is the most extensive exhibition on modern Hellenism ever presented and has been placed under the Patronage of President of the Hellenic Republic, Katerina Sakellaropoulou. It is organised by the Benaki Museum in partnership with the Bank of Greece, the National Bank of Greece and Alpha Bank and it is included in the National Programme of Bicentennial Celebrations coordinated by the ‘Greece 2021’ Committee. The “1821 Before And After’: The Making of” documentary presents the preparations for the exhibition over five years (2016-2021): the development of the concept, the selection of exhibits, and the conservation, transport and installation of objects at the Benaki Museum–Pireos 138. In the company of the exhibition curators, Tassos Sakellaropoulos and Maria Dimitriadou, Head and Curator at the Benaki Museum Historical Archives respectively, the audience will discover the original idea, the fully-developed concept and layout of the exhibition, as well as many small secrets and hidden stories through interviews and footage taken during the setup of this unique exhibition.
