Abstract

Kritikopoula, the last operetta of Spyridon Samaras, was staged at Olympia in collaboration with the Greek National Opera, directed by Petros Zoulias and music directed by Andreas Tselikas. The opera was presented for the first time in 1916 at Faliro Municipal Theatre and its huge success is reflected in the laudatory press articles of the time. The composer was repeatedly called to the stage and applauded by enthusiastic spectators. The plot of the play unfolds around the beautiful Areti, who, disguised as Manolio, for the needs of the struggle, manages to convince the Venetian duke of Crete to grant privileges to her compatriots. Love twists, songs, dance and the flame of another Cretan revolution, intertwine in an extraordinary comic opera.
