Abstract

The fifth talk organised by the Holy Metropolis of Fthiotida to mark the bicentenary of the Greek Revolution is addressed mainly to children and teachers and is dedicated to the patron saints of education, the Three Hierarchs. The first speaker presents the issue of education during the years of Ottoman rule, highlighting its historical course and the key role of the church in the spiritual awakening of the nation with the contribution of Hierarchs, scholars and teachers of the nation. Then the second speaker presents the three basic elements of true education for the three Hierarchs, which are love, respect and freedom. Concepts often found in the works of the three Hierarchs, who were the beacons of freedom and education. Finally, he stresses the inseparable relationship between the church and education.
