Abstract

The Holy Metropolis of Fthiotida organises a series of anniversary events in honour and memory of the bicentenary of the Greek Revolution of 1821 under the blessing and auspices of the Holy Synod of the Church of Greece. This talk is dedicated to the movement of the Kollyvades, which was inspired by the Mount Athos monk Grigorios Palamas, bishop of Thessaloniki. The speaker refers to the two stations of monasticism, the Hesychast and the Kollyvad movement, the role of the church in relation to Islam and the Enlightenment and finally, to the leaders of the movement, Makarios Notaras, Nikodimos Agioreitis and Athanasios Parios. The Kollyvades represented the traditional school, while their purpose was the proper preparation of the faithful for the struggle with a weapon of education and their frequent participation in the sacraments of the church.
