Abstract

The Piraeus Group Cultural Foundation (PIOP), in the context of the bicentennial activities of Piraeus Bank marking the 1821 Revolution, presents the theatrical performance “Philiki Etaireia: The brotherhood behind the Revolution”, directed by Ioli Andreadis and an original text by Ioli Andreadis and Aris Asproulis, based on research by the two authors-researchers. In the play, which combines historical events with fiction, the melancholy thread that runs through the lives of the founders of the Philiki Etaireia unfolds on stage, from the crazy and passionate vision of national independence to the hard and lonely experience of personal betrayal. This is the twelfth theatrical work of the two authors, which focuses on the Philiki Etaireia, this important organisation that was created in order to prepare the struggle of the Greeks for independence. With this work, the unknown life of the three Etairists emerges, but also something deeper, purer and more substantial. The “Holy Love” comes to light, a concept of romantic insight originally taken by Alexandros Ypsilantis, which is diffused to all the mystics of the struggle. The emergence of this shocking idea from the spiritual foundations of our nation on the surface of our theatrical life is due exclusively to the two authors.
