Abstract

The Holy Metropolis of Fthiotida organises a series of anniversary events in honour and memory of the bicentenary of the 1821 Greek Revolution under the blessing and auspices of the Holy Synod of the Church of Greece. The event is dedicated to the preparation and organisation of the revolution where the action of the learned and spiritual people, Greeks and foreigners of that time, was of key importance. The first speaker presents the forerunner and national martyr of the struggle, Rigas Velestinlis, and his catalytic contribution to the preparation of the revolution. The second speaker analyses a series of developments that followed the revolution mainly at the beginning of the 19th century, which ignited the spark of the struggle and strengthened the feeling of the uprising of the subjugated Greek for the conquest of freedom.
