Abstract
The 1821 Revolution was a world-famous event. However, this impact has not been explored, apart from the aspect of philhellenism. These international horizons of the revolution will be explored by a large international conference, to be attended by researchers from all over the world, organized by the academic journal Historein with the support of the National Bank of Greece, in the framework of the 1821-2021 Initiative. Unfortunately, the developments of the pandemic forced the organizing committee to transfer the conference to June 2022. However, an online pre-conference discussion took place in March 2021 at which the conference coordinators shall present a ten-minute lecture:
Konstantina Zanou (Columbia University), Alexander Kitroeff (Haverford College), Eugenia Palieraki (Cergy Paris Université), Dimitris Kousouris (University of Vienna), Ada Dialla (Athens School of Fine Arts), Dimitris Plantzos (National and Kapodistrian University of Athens), Ioannis Koubourlis (University of Crete), Michalis Sotiropoulos (National and Kapodistrian University of Athens) and Antonis Liakos (National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, Historein). The moderator of the discussion will be Marilena Katsimi (ERT journalist).
The online discussion will present topics that examine the Greek Revolution in its broader Mediterranean geographical and cultural context, its relationship with North and Latin America, its impact on the Balkans and the Ottoman Empire, its reception by imperial Russia, as well as issues related to antiquity and antiquities, the European historiographical production on 1821 and finally, the struggle in the age of the ideas of liberalism. The public can follow the online event and ask questions in the discussion via YouTube and Facebook Live on the Initiative communication channels.
