Abstract
The volume “The Hydra fleet in the 1821 Revolution: Expenditure and reimbursement” by Eftychia D. Liata continues EMNE’s publishing activity on the 1821 Revolution. The publication is part of the special series of the Mnimon journal (no. 19). The study examines the ways of securing financial means for the mobilization of the Hydra fleet during the battle and the payment of compensations to the island’s shipowners-sailors by the central administration during and after the end of the war operations. Based on primary sources (financial records of the Hydra Community), an attempt is made to investigate and record the financing of the Hydra fleet and to determine the size of Hydra’s naval expenses in the period of the struggle. The study is structured in three parts (The evidence-sources; the war fleet; the finances), which contain 13 analytical tables with elaborated financial data. Through the careful approach and reading of the numbers, the author offers the reader a model of historical writing.
