Abstract
In this essay (an elaborated version of a speech at the Academy of Athens, 21 March 2017), Angelos Delivorrias attempts to highlight the panorama of the factors that not only formed and reinforced the internal resistance of Hellenism during Ottoman and Venetian rule, but also shaped his individuality, “stirring up his revolutionary readiness”. Starting from the material terms of human life (land-sea trade, agricultural production, etc.), the author invites the reader on a fascinating journey through the various manifestations of the culture during the period of foreign domination (folk song, ecclesiastical art, music, folk architecture, pottery, embroidery, silversmithing, folk costumes, etc.), to capture the “upward course of Hellenism during foreign rule”. The publication is accompanied by rich photographic material and extensive bibliography.
