Abstract
How is the transformation of Karaiskakis from devil to angel explained in the last years of the Greek Revolution?
This study treats the radical change of Karaiskakis as a complex and open process in terms of its outcome, which can be understood in relation to the cosmogony caused by the war of national independence in the revolutionary areas as a whole and especially in the mountain chieftains of Rumelia. The conversion of Karaiskakis is examined in connection with the deregulation of relations and the devaluation of the practices that make up the world of “klephts and armatoles”, as well as in reference to the formation of a new type of army, the irregular army of the National Revolution.
