Abstract
Governor of Greece Ioannis Kapodistrias was an emblematic figure of modern Greek history. Although 190 years have passed since his assassination, he still preoccupies research and historiography. Criticism of his work focuses, according to many, on the authoritarian manner in which he exercised power. But everyone admits his fundamental work in building the Greek state. The book sheds light on a number of issues surrounding his actions and especially his foreign policy, with many new elements about his attempt to establish friendly relations with the neighbouring Ottoman Empire, which he considered “the basis for the pacification of the East” but also a necessary condition for the progress of the newly established Greek state.”
