Abstract

The history of the creation of the constitutions of the 1820s is as exciting and adventurous as a novel. How did the revolutionary Greeks write the constitutions? On straw mats, between orange and lemon trees, shouting and fighting, leading to small or large battles, sometimes armed. In the constitutions, the revolutionary Greeks accumulate institutional experience that will have a huge impact on European and world history.

The revolutionary constitutions are an element of our national identity and collective self-awareness. Their establishment is the foundational moment of the Greek state. When the first demonstrators, gathered in the orange grove of Piada and the lemon grove of Troezen, signed the resolutions of the constitutions with emotion, they may not be fully aware of the significance of their act. They know, however, that they are laying the foundations for the liberation of the Greek nation and its formation into a sovereign state.
