Abstract
The bicentenary of the 1821 Revolution is an important opportunity to approach and get to know more deeply the events that led to the establishment of the Greek bourgeois state, as well as the local and international economic and social conditions in which they manifested.
The historical evaluation of the 1821 Revolution, like any other historical event, starts from a specific class perspective, is objectively connected to the current social reality and is therefore utilised in the formation of a specific consciousness regarding the desired future. Throughout time and regardless of the adequacy of historical documentation, the Greek bourgeoisie and its political and ideological actors use the anniversaries of the revolution to promote the basic bourgeois ideology of “national unity”. In other words, they identify the interests of the bourgeoisie with the interests of the Greek people in order to promote the respective priorities of the capitalist power. Therefore, it is a primary need and an integral aspect of today's ideological-political and class struggle and the search for historical truth, to both release the working class and the popular strata in general from all the versions of bourgeois historiography and the extraction of the useful ones – from their point of view – historical conclusions on the revolution.
The main reason for publishing this particular collection of texts is to strengthen this effort, to dispel many of the myths of the dominant urban historiography about 1821 and provide some important conclusions. In no case, of course, do they aspire to exhaust all the historical aspects of the revolution. However, an attempt is made through the texts to highlight the essence of historical events, so that the reader can form class criteria for the study of history, in the context of a more substantial confrontation with the dominant ideology and politics.
