Abstract
The year 2021 marks the bicentenary of the 1821 Greek Revolution and the establishment of the modern Greek state. Due to the proximity of the Greek Revolution and the declaration of independence of Brazil (1822), the two nations share the same historical context for the formation and consolidation of their political and cultural identity. In the last two centuries, the paths of Greece and Brazil as independent states have met, starting from a diplomatic relationship of respect and friendship and fruitful cultural exchanges, which deserve to remain alive in the memory of both peoples.
In this context, the Embassy of Greece in Brasilia, the Consulate General of Greece in São Paulo and the Institute of Letters of the State University of Rio de Janeiro in collaboration with the Democritus University of Thrace, organise the event Liberdade e Revolução 1821-2021: o Nascimento da Grécia Moderna / Revolution and Freedom 1821-2021: The beginning of modern Greece, under the auspices of the Hellenic Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the special committee of the celebration of the anniversary of the Struggle for Greek Independence, Greece 2021.
This commemorative event aims not only to present the events that marked the modern history of Greece, but, above all, to highlight, through the participation of artists and other intellectual people, the relationship of mutual friendship and admiration that was forged between the two countries over the past 200 years. Members of the global academic community will participate in the events with announcements and cultural productions related to the Greek identity. The announcements will revolve around four thematic sections:
1. 1821 in Greece and the World: The 1821 Revolution as a statutory element of Greek history, but also as a mosaic of world history. This theme examines the political-social context that led to the Greek Revolution, taking into account not only the protagonists and the events of the War of Independence, but also the conditions under which the major European powers cooperated to guarantee the liberation of Greece.
2. Greece in the course of 200 years Greece: this section presents the historical progress of the Greek nation over the last two centuries The creation of the Greek communities in Brazil, the diplomatic relations between the two countries and the results of this auspicious cultural meeting point are also examined.
3. Greeks who left their mark on the world in the last 200 years: This theme examines the personalities who shaped the image of modern Greece in the whole world and its mark in a large range of human activities (music, sports, fine arts, medicine, technology, economics, humanities, politics, etc.).
4. 2021 as a window for the future Greece: this theme aims to study the possibilities for realising the visions for Greece in the coming decades.
