Abstract
This paper examines how philhellenism was related not only to the 1821 Revolution but continued to exist after the revolutionary period and was linked to the recording and publication of Greek folk songs. European philhellenes recorded many Greek folk songs, and even at times when such activities were rather rare for the scientific world, since popular culture had not yet been recognised as a field of research and study. The main collectors of folk songs and their collections are examined with references to their work. Reference is also made to the way in which they worked and their work is evaluated. Finally, the evaluations for these collections of Greek folk songs that exist in the modern Greek folklore bibliography, are examined. It follows from the above that German philhellenism led in the collection of Greek folk songs, followed by French and British philhellenism.
