Abstract
Adamantios Korais in his famous Memoire (Paris, 1803), referring to the development of the Greek world of his time, noted the catalytic role of the French Revolution and the subsequent events in the process of the “transformation of a people into a nation”. How does a people turn into a nation? This talk, taking as a case study the Ionian area, in the duration of a century, attempts to illuminate aspects of this process and especially the decisive role of the Greek Revolution in the formation of trends and new consciousnesses. Even if the Ionians cannot constitute a representative case of the whole Greek world, it gives us the opportunity, due to the concentrated historical experience, to detect not only the steps and stages of the process, but also, the multiplicity of historical “contingencies”, the alternatives that failed to impose themselves over time.
