Abstract
Deste’s annual exhibition at the Old Slaughterhouses in Hydra this year is entitled “199”, a clear reference to the bicentenary of the Greek Revolution, with one year less and a special installation by Kostis Velonis, where eight funeral masks of fighters from 1821, confrontations and correlations of the historical material seek an unconventional approach to our national narrative. Therefore, it is not an anniversary exhibition, at least not in the strict terms of a similar undertaking, with moralistic interpretations and related ideologies. On the contrary, the artist hopes that this exhibition will provoke and contribute to the reconsideration of our relationship with history, at the same time redefining the role of art in major social and political upheavals in the context of historical research.
