Abstract

Talk by His Eminence Panteleimonos, Metropolitan of Veria, Naoussa and Kampania, within the framework of the series of talks on “Blood of Martyrs and Heroes” marking the bicentenary of the 1821 Greek Revolution. The 17th talk discusses the historical accuracy and injustices concerning people who were slandered for their role in the Greek Revolution, such as the Ecumenical Patriarch Grigorios V. The latter was forced to excommunicate those involved in the revolution as his goal was to protect the civilian population from the serious consequences of the sultan’s wrath. The speaker presents as evidence of the true attitude of Grigorios V the holding of a secret ceremony at the patriarchal church on 4 April 1821 where the excommunication of Alexandros Ypsilantis was lifted as well as his services and sacrifice in general.
