Abstract

The question that is often asked is whether Greece as an independent nation-state, given its 200-year course, is a success story or a failed story. It is obviously difficult and dangerous to give a simple, single and definitive answer, and a “scientific” one at that. This book is a comprehensive reception of the history of the modern Greek state which, like any reception in fact, it has strong elements of ideological use of history or, if nothing else, personal preferences. We could, however, claim, with the utmost assertion, that the 200-year life of independent Greece is a very interesting story, not at all boring or monotonous. Greece operated in this long period as a field, as a laboratory in which, new conditions and new institutions were tested or even transformed, the use of which has been transferred in other countries, or were repeated in Greece in later historical phases and under other conditions.
