Charting the events of an ambiguous struggle: Greek troops and land battles

Date

17 March 2021

Abstract

"Land battles played a decisive role in the 1821 Revolution, even though the most valuable weapon of the struggle was its fleet. Crucial battles and sieges were those of Tripolitsa (September 1821), Peta and Dervenakia (July 1822), Messolongi (October–December 1822 and April 1825–April 1826), Myloi (June 1825), Athens (1827) and Petra (September 1829). The outcome of these battles played a role in another aspect, that of the formation of a regular Greek army. This parameter, in turn, had a key impact on political affairs, internal balances and the outcome of the struggle."
