Concept

Inspired by the bicentenary of the 1821 Greek Revolution, the 1821 Greek Revolution Observatory will be a valuable legacy for contemporary and future research. The Observatory’s working groups are recording and commenting on academic activities, public discussions as well as exhibitions, performances, events and other activities, which are being held to mark the bicentenary. The material, collected mainly from event announcements/descriptions posted to the internet, is intended to serve as a reference template and as a basis for a digital archive for future research on historical culture. The main goal of the project is to make sense of these activities with analyses at regular intervals written by the project researchers. In this way, for the first time, a methodological model will be established for the recording, documenting and researching of digital archival material that is produced and consumed in the digital space.

As one of the main reasons for the establishment of the Observatory is to engage in dialogue with corresponding efforts at European level and to comply with international standards in terms of quality, it will seek to promote its work internationally either through participating in or organising at least one international conference or to publish in an international journal. In this way, the Democritus University of Thrace, although it is a regional educational institution in Greece, will become an international example for original historical research.

Finally, the Observatory will be benefit at a national as well as a local level as it will seek to bring the public, especially people living in Thrace, closer to the monitoring of the creation of history and historical research, as access to be site will be free to all in the Greek and English languages.
